Cartographic and Data Production Systems
Case study: Digital Map of Prague
Digital Map of Prague (DMP) is a basic planimetric map product depicting the territory of the City of Prague, the largest city and the capital of the Czech Republic. DMP is derived from the Unified Digital Map of Prague and the Digital Reference Map of Prague (in production until 2007) and it features two fundamental large-scale map products of Prague area – cadastral map and technical map.
In year 2007 T-MAPY was contracted (together with its partner NESS Czech) by Prague City Development Office to design and implement a data model and a map generating application for a new map product – the Digital Map of Prague. Also, T-MAPY was to provide the office with services related to the administration and update of DMP and further development of its technological environment.
The information system of DMP utilizes a combination of the following technologies:
- Esri technology: ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, Data Interoperability Extensions
- Bentley technology: Bentley Geospatial Server, Bentley Map, Bentley PowerMap
- Oracle technology: RDBMS Oracle
- T-MAPY technology: T-WIST + modules
There were four modules implemented within this project:
- Data issuance and verification module for Esri ArcGIS technology
- tools for definition of issued data set and its export from ArcGIS Desktop
- Online data issuance module (eShop)
- tools for data format setup, data selection, delivery, billing and data archiving
- Data update module
- data update processes
- Data update management module
- a set of T-WIST applications for update processes monitoring
Thanks to its concept of managing cadastral and technical maps within one system, unique technological solution combining Esri, Bentley and Oracle technology and wide extent and quality of used data, Digital Map of Prague represents one of the most significant projects not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. The project was awarded the Innovation in cadastre and land development prize by Bentley in 2009 and was also presented with Special Achievement in GIS award by Esri in 2010.
Case study: Information System of Cartography
Land Survey Office (LSO) is the administrator of the State Map Series of the Czech Republic. In 2007 T-MAPY was contracted by the Office to develop entirely new system for its map production. The main requirements on the system were interconnectivity to source databases, high production rate, update via change records andcomputerized cartographic production.
Information System of Cartography (ISC) represents a seamless database-oriented production line designed for processing of basic and thematic map products in scales 1:10 000, 1:25 000, 1:50 000 and 1:100 000. By 2010 two main subsystems – DATA 10 and DATA 50 – were implemented and live versions released. As a part of the contract T-MAPY is to provide subsequent maintenance, support and system development for the following 3 years.
ISC is based on Esri technology with utilization of CPS eXpress, software produced by T-Kartor Sweden AB. The system uses long optimistic transactions and works in online mode primarily in LAN network and is often used simultaneously by up to 50 users. The system's architecture is built on four major pillars:
- Esri Geodatabase data model
- facilitates assigning of multiple cartographic representations to one element, this can be used for element visualization in various map scales or thematic overlays
- robust Oracle Spatial solution
- provides efficient management of large seamless cartographic databases and allows data update based on detection of the changes in source databases
- production system: ArcGIS and CPS eXpress
- data management is carried out in ArcGIS clients that access the particular version of Esri geodatabase through ArcSDE middleware; map exports are processed by CPS eXpress which utilizes principles of database driven cartography - composition of every map sheet is generated automatically using pre-defined templates, information from index map layer attributes or external data sources
- management system: Workflow Manager
- tools for planning, management and production process evaluation
Through the combination of extensive know-how and elite technologies we were able to develop and implement an exceptional solution for database cartographic production. This system is unique with respect to its extent and complexity not only in the Czech Republic but we assume it ranks among the world’s most significant systems dedicated to map production.
